How does Acupuncture work ?
From a Western medicine perspective, research has shown that the
body releases endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers) in
response to acupuncture. Furthermore, it can be viewed that
acupuncture causes a localized response. The body recognizes the
needle as a foreign object which mediates a cascade of
biochemical responses. The end result is an increase in the
circulation of blood and oxygen and the removal of waste
products. More recent studies have shown that acupuncture point
stimulation can cause electrical activity in associated centers
of the brain.
From a Chinese Medicine point of view, diseases/symptoms are
formed when our body and/or mind are out of balance. Qi (energy)
and Xue (blood) flows in a series of pathways in the body. By
inserting needles into specific points on these pathways, it
promotes natural healing and enhances the immune system. These
positive results will reflect on both your physical and
emotional health.

-
Reducing Pain. The body after being inserted with
needles can produce Morphon like neuro-chemical matter,
called endorphin which is an analgesic matter that reduces
pain without the side effects of cortisone injections.
-
Reducing spasm. Relieves and soothes the muscles and
allows the organs to relax, so you can treat diseases like
fibromyalgia, asthma, abdominal cramps, etc...
-
Reducing Inflammation. Could treat either
bacterial/viral infection like flu or aseptic infection like
bursitis or tendonitis, etc.
-
Reducing histamine. Could reduce the IgE level from
the blood serum and so, your allergy symptom like allergic
sinusitis or allergic dermatitis could improve.
-
Increasing
your immune system, can be seen in T cell counts, PHA
test, and IgG, IgM, IgA and CH 50 tests.
-
Increasing
the serotonin level in your brain which is the nature
neurochemical transmitters could make your mood change like
anxiety, depression.
Does Acupuncture hurt ?
Chinese
Acupuncture is bu tong, painless. Since acupuncture
needles are very thin, insertion is practically painless.
Sensation may vary from feeling no pain to a small pinch. It is
not the aim of the Physician to invoke pain or discomfort to the
patient, but just the opposite.
What can I expect
during a visit ?
During your initial visit, you will be asked complete a
health history questionnaire. This is followed by a
consultation, with the Acupuncture Physician to discuss your
symptoms, overall health, life style, physical exam, etc. A
*diagnosis (TCM) is made and a treatment plan, which may include
acupuncture and/or herbs, nutrition, etc are explained to the patient.
Based on the diagnosis, needles are inserted in very specific
locations and are removed approximately 20 minutes later. The
initial visit is usually an hour to an hour and a half and
subsequent visits usually last between 45 min to an hour.
How many treatments
will I need ?
The number of treatments will vary from person to person.
Some patients experience immediate or gradual relief, while
others with chronic conditions (existing for 3 months or longer)
may take several treatments to experience significant results.
On the average, patients begin feeling some relief after the 2nd
to 4th treatment and more lasting relief is achieved
with subsequent treatments (incremental). Treatment frequency depends on a
variety of factors: duration of the problem(s),
severity, the patient’s constitution and amount of
Qi (energy). I may suggest one to two treatments
per week and eventually less frequent visit as the healthcare
goals are achieved. The ultimate goal, of course, is to achieve
the “maintenance” stage where little support is
needed regardless of your condition, my goal and intension is to
bring forth lasting wellness to you.
